Green Makeovers Making a Splash in the UK

sustainable home livingTo achieve 2050 green housing objectives, a Government adviser warns that UK requires 12,500 retrofits weekly.A big three million pound research project is going to focus on the task of refurbishing 12,500 homes weekly for the next 40 years. This is for the purpose of determining whether Britain’s cold and draughty houses could be improved by large scale produced building technologies. The research project will focus on the best way to start a nationwide green business program and is being supported by Energy Technology Institute (ETI) and consortium of businesses (e.g. building consultancy BRE, EDF energy firm, Peabody-Energy and property firm etc).

Based on Government figures, most of the UK’s 26 million homes will be still in use in 2050 which means that there is a need for large scale home energy efficiency improvement on the housing stock. If this is done then there is a possibility that the country can achieve its goal of curtailing carbon emissions by 80% by mid century. Continue reading

Consumers Need Help in Identifying Energy Efficient Practices

The CFL light bulbsIf you think “turning off the lights” is one of the best ways to save energy, you may be wrong. But you are just like everyone out there; most people always say the same thing. So, here’s a survey that shows people’s misconceptions on the best ways to save energy.

Shahzeen Attari, one of the proponents of the study entitled, “Public Perceptions of Energy Consumption and Savings”, said turning off the lights is not a bad idea at all but it doesn’t have much impact when compared to swapping out bulbs for the more energy-efficient ones. Leaving energy-efficient lights on are actually effective. The Department of Energy affirms that the lifespan of compact fluorescents or CFLs is reduced when they’re regularly switched on and off. If you leave a room for less than 15 minutes, keeping a CFL on is truly more efficient; but if you’re gone for more than 15 minutes, it’s best to keep the lights off.

UK Turns Up the Volume on Green Education

More green job creation in the UKUK’s deputy Prime Minster said householders can make their homes energy efficiency, save on costs without any advance payments through the Green Deal Finance. He has promised the coalition governments would closely monitor a ‘quiet green revolution’ that wont have any ‘green gimmicks’, instead focusing on creation of low carbon job opportunities.

Speaking at an event hosted by business advisory firm TEDCO, he said his government would not make headline grabbing environmental claims like the previous government. He said politicians talk enthusiastically about the environment and need for a green economy, but his government would do things differently. He added that they would not dazzle the people with green gimmicks but instead would like to make an impression on people by doing the job quietly.

Will the Government approve a Renewable Energy Standard?

wind energy
It looks like carbon cap is going to remain a dream and not a reality for environmentalists, but there is hope that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s energy bill will cover more than an oil spill measure. Last week Reid said his bill does not include a renewable energy standard (RES) or a mandatory percentage of the country’s electricity coming from green sources. Today a few Democrats and even a Republican have shown that they are keen on including an RES. Republican Senator Sam Brownback (Kansas) said though he’s against the carbon cap in energy bill, he’s in favor of a national RES.

Republican Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas said that he was still against a carbon cap in an energy bill. Kansas produces 2.9% of its electricity from renewable sources and is a wind rich state. Environmentalists are pushing aggressively for strong RES in any energy bill, but many times polices on renewable energies are forced to stop and start again. Continue reading

Car Charging Group Praises California Lawmakers

Sustainable enerjgy
At a recently held California Public Utilities Commission meeting, California regulators voted to make it easier for electric car charging companies to resell power in California. They commended Car Charging Group Inc. [NASDAQ:CCGI] a company that owns and provides electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in California with goals to construct infrastructure nationwide. Because of the vote of confidence, EV charging companies like Car Charging Group can now easily operate in California without the troublesome regulations of an investor-owned utility.

CCG’s CEO Michael D Farkas said California has led the way in green technology and the state is further clearing the road for EV charging companies by lifting regulations that restricted their ability to sell power. He continued, saying that this is a great way to bring in revenue from EV Charging stations and will help in achieving his company’s goals. He encouraged other states to follow California’s example stating that if they did the company would be able lower the price of their services, benefitting both property owners and consumers.

Terra-Gen Gets Green Light for Wind Farm in Mojave Desert

Renewable energy
Tuesday marks the start of the Alta Wind Energy Center, which plans to build turbines on thousands of acres in California’s desolate Mojave Desert. It is being called the largest power project in the country, placing towering wind turbines in the Mojave Desert foothills, which will produce electricity for 600,000 homes in Southern California.

The project has faced a lot of problems, from years of ownership changes, opposition from local residents and endless infrastructure delays. On Tuesday the project will finally kick off in the Tehachapi Pass, a budding hot spot for wind energy located 75 miles north of Los Angeles. Analysts have said that after completion, the Alta Center could produce three times more energy than the country’s largest existing wind farm.

Gulf Coast now Looking for Green and Clean Energy jobs

Gulf of MexicoPeople do not want to go back to business as usual just because the oil spill has been stopped by BP. Over a visit to the coast it’s been observed that some people are losing hope. Gulf Coast residents need green energy jobs and not oil or gas related jobs that have impacted the health and the environment in a negative way. There is a dire need for clean energy jobs which can be attained through green education polices that put our economy on a green energy path.

People have heard about the expected creation of green jobs and stimulation of the economy through clean energy government policies. Obama has talked about this in the Gulf of Mexico tragedy, in his Oval Office speech. In terms of action, nothing substantial has been done, it’s been all talk so far. Action generates green business opportunities, not talk. Continue reading
