The Future of Solar Renewables: New Quantum – Dot Photovoltaics

Solar power has always been the renewable energy source that captures the imagination. Free, instant electricity with no moving parts and nothing to wear out –you just point your panel at the sun and plug in. It’s such a wonderful concept that it’s always been in the back of every renewable energy ecogeek’s mind. On top of that, it’s a commonly quoted figure that the sun blasts the earth with enough energy in an hour to produce a year’s worth of electricity. It all sounds very promising and seductive; the problem is that solar panels just aren’t very efficient. In fact most modern solar panels are only able to convert around 25% of the energy that hits them into electricity. That’s not very much and because of that solar panels just haven’t been very successful when it comes to development as a means of mass power generation.

But wait – there’s more! That’s not the only thing that is having a negative effect on the popularity of solar power. The other issue (and probably the killing stroke) is expense. Solar panels use components and materials (gold, to name one) that are extremely expensive. Because of that, the panels are very costly. The truth of the matter is that not everyone is committed enough to alternative energy that they have desire to shell out thousands of dollars to purchase a machine that only does its job at ¼ to 1/3 efficiency. Retirees and Unemployed are Perfect for Green Opportunities

There is nothing more debilitating than not having a job at an age far from retirement. This is exactly what some men and women in their 50s and 60s are experiencing after losing their jobs since the nation’s economic crisis that shook many business establishments to reduce their manpower. And the ongoing fear for many is that they might be discarded from the workforce forever, especially at the event of having to compete with the younger generation whose unemployment rate is likewise higher.

The Labor Department statistics have shown that of the 14.9 million unemployed, more than 2.2 million are 55 or older, and nearly half of them have been unemployed six months or longer—a big blow that could affect their retirement package in the future. Continue reading

Loan Program for Green Home Upgrades

green loan programs for home retrofitting pushedMost business establishments and large scale industries have started retrofitting and remodeling to be at par with the “go green” global inclination. Some of these green programs are government backed or funded providing loans to the business sector with environmentally friendly projects. These green loan programs are already being adopted globally.

Green programs include energy efficiency measures, pollution reduction, recycling, and reusing and proper waste management system. However, the residential sector who wants to go green to cut cost on energy is in indeterminate state. Home owners do not know how to start because of the high expenses that goes with house remodeling and house greening.

Time for Green Home Makeovers

Homes across the US benefit from US retrofitting programWith the campaign on go-green programs going full blast, more and more organizations are committed to help in this global campaign. Backed by government funding, these green sectors find ways to reach the grassroots and empower them on energy-efficiency measures and saving money. It is a given circumstances that low-income families cannot afford a green upgrades on their home because of the high cost that goes with it.

US Department of Energy chose 120 organizations across the nation to bring this program to fruition with $120 million allotment. The program is designed to finance and install variety of energy-efficient equipment and fixtures in green homes including tankless hot water system, energy-monitoring devices, small wind turbines and solar panels for electric systems. It is focused on effective insulation use, sealing air ducts and replacement of heating and cooling systems at home.

Going Green With an Eco Restaurant

Cafe Habana owner, Sean MeenanIf Mr. Sean Meenan’s not into speaking engagements about sustainability concepts, he’s nowhere else to be found except right at his very own Habana Outpost, his pride and joy – an ecologically conscious restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Recently, Mr. Meenan led a group of girls, ages 11 to 14, around his restaurant’s brightly colored outdoor patio. It was a great opportunity for Mr. Meenan to show his eco-restaurant’s solar panels, a rainwater-collection system that feeds the toilets, a recycling and composting station, wheat-board wall paneling, corn-based plastic cups and a bicycle-powered blender powered.

Aside from running his eco-restaurant, Mr. Meenan is an amazing spokesman for environmentalism. He goes from one speaking engagement to another so he could teach others about environmentalism. Through these speaking engagements, he tries his very best to let people see his point, so that just like him, people will go green and do something for the environment’s sake. Continue reading

Time for Australia to Go Green

The Australia[/caption]As the rest of the world is taking on clean energy sources, Australia joins in as well. Australia is planning to build the biggest wind farm in the southern hemisphere by 2013. These plans are Australia’s quick responses towards fighting off climate change as well as in controlling its abundant clean energy sources, such as wind, solar, waves, geothermal energy and bioenergy.

Australia lacks the political and commercial will to take on big renewable energy projects. Consequently, only a very small percentage, particularly 6% of power in Australia is supplied with renewable energy. Aside from the lack of political and commercial will, Australia’s remote areas and almost 60,000 kilometers or 37,000 miles of coast hinders the tie up of new, remote power sources into the grid.
