US Voters Warm Up to Renewable Energy
It’s election season once again. One of the most important times of the year, where we get to decide the direction that our country is moving in. It looks like elections this year will hold good news for renewable energy. In a recent poll of voters conducted by Public Policy Polling for the NRDC Action Fund it was found that the majority of voters were in support of an energy bill with strong ties to renewable sources. The poll was conducted in 23 congressional districts and concluded that at least 52% of voters in these districts would be more inclined to support a candidate whose platform included energy policy that would cut pollution and reduce the effects of climate change.
This is good news for the booming renewable energy sector. Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has already gotten the ball rolling by supporting renewable energy projects in the United States. Continued legislation in favor of renewables will only further cement the progress that has been made in the past 3 years. Continue reading
ON LINE – Nevada’s Southwest Intertie Project: How it Demonstrates Commitment to Renewable Green Energy
The town of Apex, Nevada is normally just the location of the Apex Regional Landfill (the largest landfill in the state of Nevada), a small relief power station that comes online when nearby Las Vegas is overloading the grid and not much else. However last week brought red-letter days for this dusty, nondescript stretch of Hwy 93 situated just northeast of the city of lights. The One Nevada Transmission Line or “ON Line” (so clever!) project commencement was hosted at NV Energy’s [NASDAQ: NVE] Harry Allen Generating Station campus on Tuesday. It was a fairly star-studded event with U.S. Energy Secretary Ken Salazar and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid both in attendance, alongside a veritable who’s who of Nevada’s energy-industry brass to witness the beginning of a project that is being billed as a significant breakthrough in the support of renewable power and a major source of green collar jobs, as well as being symbolic of the new direction the state of Nevada is taking towards energy policy through the strong support of renewables.
The One Nevada transmission line consists of a 500 kilovolt power conduit that will cover the entire length of the state of Nevada running north-south. It will eventually be extended as far north as Idaho. The portion of the line that will be completed in this first phase consists of a 235-mile line extending from the Harry Allen site to a new electrical substation that will be constructed northwest of the town of Ely, Nevada. The projected price tag for the project will top $510 million. Continue reading
5 More Green Living and Eco Friendly Apps for Iphone and Android
These days our phones are so much more than just simple communication devices. The Apple [Nasdaq: APPL] iPhone and Google [Nasdaq: GOOG] Android platforms are revolutionary. They are our lifelines, and they also provide us with help on things that many people would never imagine a phone can do. With that in mind, here are 5 more green related apps that Eco Institution found when researching our last article.
Carbon Tracker – The Carbon Tracker app is a GPS-enabled program that helps users to actually calculate and account for their carbon footprint from daily commuting, business trips and vacations. The cool thing is that you can actually set goals for maximum emissions per month and then check up on your progress. It can also be networked for use by more than one person for businesses and universities. Continue reading
Top 5 Green Apps for iPhone and Android
These days our phones are so much more than just simple communication devices. They are our lifelines, and they also provide us with help on things that many people would never imagine a phone can do. Like going green; your smartphone can do just that. Dozens of applications have been created that can help you with going green at home and elsewhere. Here are a sampling of a few of Eco Institution’s favorite green apps and their uses.
Carbon Meter – The carbon meter by ViralMesh helps you track and log your eco-friendly activities like walking or biking instead of driving as well as the amount of Co2 emissions you save because of it. The savings are deposited in the program’s EcoBank so that you can keep track. There are also specials or discounts available from ViralMesh’s green partners as your carbon savings stack up. Rhode Island Introduces Special Program to Meet Demand for Green Collar Professionals
Providence, Rhode Island has now begun a special training program in order to meet the growing demand for green collar professionals in the state. The 16-week program allows participants to earn in-demand certifications for energy-efficient construction, green renovation and deconstruction, renewable energy, as well as lead and asbestos removal. It is being offered to low income residents in the west Providence area free of charge.
The program is being sponsored in part by Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline. He explained that the program, which has started with just 67 students will eventually grow to 200 or more. The certification will be awarded after a mix of classroom, job readiness and on-site training. After 5 weeks of class study, each participant will receive a weekly stipend for 11 weeks as part of the on-the-job portion of the training program. Partnering with the city for the job-training component of the program are Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living, an environmentally focused South Providence nonprofit organization, and Ecotope, a South Providence waste-management company formerly known as CleanScape.
Michael Van Leesten, chairman and CEO of the of Rhode Island said the emerging green economy promises a wealth of new job opportunities for Rhode Island residents, part of the reason that the state has chosen to fund the program. Opportunities Industrialization Center is another South Providence-based organization partnering with the city on the program.

“Blue Green Tour” Set to Travel Country Promoting Green Collar Employment and Legislation

From now until September, a group of labor unions and environmental organizations is beginning a national bus tour dubbed “The Job’s Not Done Tour.” The group plans to visit 17 states and make 30 stops beginning in California and passing through, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas, and Michigan on the way to Richmond, Virginia. The tour is being staffed by workers in the clean energy sector, also known as green collar workers.
Blue-Green Alliance Executive Director David Foster told reporters on a press conference call the tour will work to promote green collar employment as well as renewable and alternative energy production. The program will also highlight the relationship between the ongoing economic crisis and the need to pass climate change and clean energy jobs legislation.
Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen highlighted the importance of creating new green collar jobs in the high-tech sector and the need for the government to make a serious commitment to modernize America’s green economy.
Baby Boomers Join Green Collar Workforce

Increasingly, Baby Boomers considering delayed retirement are joining the green collar workforce. The 79 million baby boomers currently nearing retirement age are increasingly moving towards the green sector to take advantage of the opportunities it affords. The Pew Research Center conducted a survey in June 2010 and found that 60 percent of adults ages 50-61 are planning to put off retirement due to the recession. In addition, 35 percent of individuals 62 years and older reported that they’ve already postponed retirement. Current unemployment figures paint a picture that is discouraging for all workers; however the green sector has proven to be very recession resistant in part due to massive government subsidies supporting the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries. These include a variety of corporate exemptions, tax credits, grants and loans for the solar and wind power industries as well as funds allocated through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act earmarked for retrofit and energy efficiency programs.

Ford Wins Top Honors with Eco-Conscious Designs

Ford Motor Company [NYSE: F] has managed to rise from the ashes of the automotive crisis stronger than ever, snagging the prestigious awards in two distinct market sectors for their Fusion™ passenger sedan and Transit Connect™ commercial vehicle. A panel of 49 automotive journalists at the Detroit Auto Show named the vehicles North American Car and Truck of the year, respectively. It represents a huge stride for a domestic automaker to sweep the awards in this fashion, especially in an era of bailouts and struggling sales (although it should be noted that Ford is the only American Car Manufacturer who didn’t require bailout money during the financial crisis).

Successful Tesla IPO “Charges” Electric Car Market

In the midst of a struggling economy, it always feels good to hear about a company that has managed to carve out some success despite the trying times. It feels even better when that company is a key player in the green technology sector. In this case the company is Tesla Motors [Nasdaq: TSLA], the manufacturer of the groundbreaking Tesla Roadster.
A June IPO (Initial Public Offering) for Tesla managed to raise 200 million dollars in equity financing for the company, the first US automaker to go public in 54 years. The success of their financing push in the midst of the current financial turmoil is an encouraging sign for the electric car market in general, signaling that investors (and hopefully consumers) are ready to move on the technology. In addition since IPO’s in general have lost popularity with investors since the dot com crisis earlier this decade, the relative strength of Tesla’s IPO may be another herald of success.
