Ryan Reynolds Says the BP Gulf Disaster is Far From Over
Canadian television and film actor, Ryan Reynolds, has been known worldwide for his best known roles in the comedy and romantic films, such as National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Waiting…, Just Friends, Definitely Maybe, and so many others. But there’s one thing that the world doesn’t know about Ryan. He has a softer side, compassionate to be exact.
Even though he was born and raised in Canada, Ryan still shows compassion over the Gulf disaster. When Ryan flew over the Deepwater Horizon site, he was extremely saddened. It was far from over, which is opposite from all the news reports.

Senator Harry Reid Supports Nevada’s Growing Eco Sector
At Sand Harbor State Park, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hosted the 2010 Lake Tahoe Summit the other day. Since 1997, Reid has always been instrumental in restoring the world famous Lake Tahoe. When he saw the lake’s critical environmental conditions, he immediately responded by hosting the first Tahoe Summit way back in 1997.
As a way of helping the people from Nevada and the Lake Tahoe, Reid authored and sponsored the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act. Through such act, a whopping $415 million was authorized for eight years. The funds were used for providing fuels reduction, environmental improvement program projects, storm water management and watershed restoration. Continue reading
County Hires New Green Energy Consultants
Fore Solutions aims to provide the necessary support for the creation of a green and sustainable infrastructure for the project. The firm will support the project in terms of supplying the needed consultants for project management. It will also help in offering design services to help achieve the above objective.
The county will award the firm with a $23,000 second phase contract price once the project pushes through. This, however, will not happen until after a November 2 vote. The firm will provide project management and administration in the project’s construction and administration and design phase. Also included is an evaluation of design specifications and documents.
BP – From Social Responsibility to Environmental Catastrophe

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has triggered debate concerning how to effectively gauge corporate social responsibility. Many people have begun to doubt the intent of big companies, suspecting that they are not doing their job in ways that will protect both people and the environment.
In the case of BP [NYSE: BP] who was liable for the explosion and oil spill associated with the Deepwater Horizon deep-sea oil rig, the public has really been forced to take a second look at whether or not they can truly believe a company’s efforts to maintain an image of social responsibility. Before the oil spill, BP was lauded for its “Beyond Petroleum” campaign and the company’s efforts to position itself as the greenest fossil fuel producer. BP’s work in the field of marketing and reputation management even snagged two awards last year: PRWeek campaign of the year as well as an Effie from the American Marketing Association. Things were looking good for the London, UK based energy giant.

Make Your Home Green
Environmental training programs show that household furniture are one of the main sources of toxic volatile organic compounds or VOCs. These compounds usually are used in furniture finishes, glues, and foams manufactured in large quantities. These types of compounds are emitted from the furniture for years. They were proven to be detrimental to human health and the ozone layer – the earth’s natural protection from the sun’s UV rays.
A Wikipedia green certification article has provided the following definition of VOCs:
Although VOCs include both man-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds, it is the [man-made] VOCs that are regulated, especially for indoors where concentrations can be highest. VOCs are typically not acutely toxic but have chronic effects. Because the concentrations are usually low and the symptoms slow to develop, analysis of VOCs and their effects is a demanding area.”
Man-made VOCs may contain the following: Continue reading
Green Tax Incentives and Missed Opportunities
Despite of the many budget cuts experienced by different government sectors, the amount of tax incentives is increasing for companies which are paving the way to making their buildings more energy-efficient and gradually changing their infrastructure to enable them to use renewable power source. However, in spite of the good news, such opportunity is hardly ever successfully taken advantage of according to an article written by Steve Heusinger and Ramon Reynoso.
$2.3 billion federal budget is reserved as incentives for companies investing in renewable resources. But applying for such incentive might be more complex than most people think. The awarding of incentives is hampered by the constant changes and rule revisions for the government’s incentive program. More than 1,200 state and local incentive programs await companies joining the race towards becoming energy-efficient. These incentive programs come in the form of rebates and loans, sales, property tax, and corporate savings. But these incentives are never fully taken advantage of due to burdensome bureaucratic processes involved in the tax credit.

STRATEGIES FOR A GREENER ECONOMY
Today, environmental concerns have grown and the people, companies and industries have realized that these are actually beneficial to them. So, many are already banking on the green economy. In the same way, Maryland has recognized its benefits and is also doing what the others are embarking on.
Governor Martin O’Malley is hoping to create or maintain 100,000 green jobs by 2015. Additionally, he also hopes that the state will rely more on wind power and solar energy; improve its public transportation and prop up high-density development around transit hubs. So, he asked the Department of Business and Economic Development to form the Green Jobs and Industry Task Force. Upon Governor O’Malley’s mandate, Christian Johansson, Secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development, convened 31 Marylanders who are at the same time realizing the benefits of a greener Maryland economy. Air Pollution Impacts the World – But Help is on the Way!
Presently industry officials are adamant on giving power companies some leniency and flexibility, because of the number of existing air regulations and more that are to come. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) which comprises of a membership of all investor owned utilities and includes Duke and FPL group, were pushing for a climate bill that was released in May.
The climate bill released by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) concerns the power sector, major manufacturers and transportation. If Obama and Reid are successful in their plan to focus only on power plants then the power companies and EEI need leniency or some relaxation of the regulation. Both parties to the meeting are close mouthed and refused to divulge any details.

Disagreement over Pollution affects Climate talks

Climate change legislation in the Senate may be dependent upon the secret meetings that have been going on between a select group of environmentalists and a number of electric utility executives. Chris Miller the top energy executive for Majority Leader Harry Reid initiated the meeting, with the hope of resolving more then a decade of dispute on Clean Air Act regulations. Another aim of the meeting was to cut down and limit greenhouse gas emissions.
From reliable sources, both groups are adamant and not budging an inch. The power companies are insisting on relief from air pollution rules, and want special dispensation applicable only to their industry.A failure to reach a compromise among the major players may cause Reid to eliminate the greenhouse limits altogether from the bill which is being submitted in less then two weeks. On Monday night, several prominent people were present at the Caucus Room restaurant to discuss key issues, from the allocation of valuable emission allocations in a utility-only climate bill to not using aging coal fired power plants anymore. Talks were not fruitful over the air pollution regulations. Continue reading
BP to start test to stop oil spill
BP began a test that could potentially stop the oil spill from its destroyed rig on Wednesday. If the cap tests run smoothly, BP finally will be able to demonstrate results in stopping the oil spill from its rig that went out of control three very long months ago. Retired Coast Guard admiral Thad W. Allen confirmed after a briefing in the state of New Orleans after BP scientists approved the plan. The test were delayed, yet again for almost a day to make sure that mistakes weren’t being made.
The new test will involve an attempt to close another valve that was left open to alleviate the pressure and continues to leak. The test will include a serious of steps to close the open valves one by one while considering the safety of the procedure. The worst thing to happen if the tests fail will result in the leaking of the well from the bottom of the sea instead of going through the hole in the destroyed oil rigs.
