Going Green for Drivers – How to Save Money and the Environment

More than 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide is discharged into the world’s atmosphere each year by the cars that we drive. According to the United Nations, “The transportation sector accounts for 30 percent of greenhouse fuel emissions in developed countries … and that share is rising.”

By making small changes in your driving habits, you can help to reduce these numbers and save money at the same time. By driving smarter, you can reduce your fuel costs and your “carbon footprint” as well.

Take a $20 bill out of your wallet. Now light a match and watch the money burn up in smoke. Sounds crazy, right? Yet many of us do something similar every time we drive. We fill up our gas tanks, then burn extra fuel – and money – that we could be saving. Not to mention, we produce much more harmful air pollution than we should be. Continue reading

Cars Are Getting Cleaner, Faster

green cars bannerTaking a deep breath nowadays might just be a little bit healthier than it was just a few short years ago. It’s common knowledge that cars and transportation are a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other airborne pollutants. However, according to recent figures new cars today are cleaner than ever before. Of course most consumers expect that cars will get cleaner as time goes on; as part of the natural progression of technology and the demands of continuing legislation regulating vehicle emissions. What might come as a surprise is how quickly the change is happening.

Of course progress is most noticeable among the cleanest of the herd. Average carbon emission figures for the cleanest cars dropped by 21 per cent over the last four years. According to consumer information website Green-Car-Guide.com, cars in the low-emission group emitted an average of 102.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer driven for the 2010 model year (CO2 is considered to be the primary contributor to global warming). In 2006 the same group recorded an average emission of 131.1 g/km. The difference of28.3 g/km represents the 21 per cent drop.

Green Automaker Standings Announced for 2010

natural gas carAs the concern over global warming and its connection to vehicle emissions has increased over the past few years, alternative fuel vehicles and other green automobiles are now becoming more popular. Cars have been singled out as one of the major contributors to air pollution, so to minimize the effects that cars have on the environment different car manufacturers have made varying versions of their own green autos. This year the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) awarded Honda Motor Co. [NYSE: HMC] as the “Greenest Automaker” for the fifth consecutive year for its effort to reduce carbon emissions.

Toyota and Hyundai were tied at second place. Honda beat them by only one point. Toyota almost made it to the top this year but lacked effort in reducing carbon emissions. Hyundai’s fleet showed considerable improvements in fuel efficiency which put it in a contender spot. In order to determine the rankings, the top eight car manufacturers’ average per-mile smog pollution and global warming emissions of its vehicle fleet were studied. The top eight car manufacturers are Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Continue reading

Americans Struggle to Decide on Green Cars

car keyFuel efficiency is now vying to be the #1 selling point for new cars in the current market. There are endless promotions on fuel efficient cars but it seems that at least in America, consumers really aren’t sure what type of vehicle really fits their needs.

Hybrid cars are being manufactured in large numbers with hopes that consumers will be interested and begin to purchase them. Other Americans are waiting patiently for the first all-electric cars to hit the market. There are flexfuel vehicles that are ready to burn E85 ethanol right off the lot and of course we can’t forget the venerable (and increasingly popular) clean diesel. With the many discussions about carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their effect to the global environment, many people are interested in purchasing a more fuel-efficient vehicle, if not just to save money then also to help reduce CO2 emissions in their own little way. But why are so many Americans holding back on this decision for now? Continue reading

go green bikeHave you ever wondered how much savings you have made if you were not using your car to run short errands like going to church, buying some bread for dinner, dropping off kids to the playground? It can be a considerable amount if you do these types of tasks daily. Eco Consultants should definitely be asking customers if they have considered biking instead. Why not? New Green Education Spotlight Needs to be on Women

Green jobs for womenTwenty percent more jobs will be created as the government invests in green initiatives. At least, that’s what policymakers have always believed in. They are right but the problem is, women are not as blessed with green jobs as compared to men.

With regards to white collar green jobs, women are not well-represented. As politicians discuss about green jobs, blue-collar work are most often given emphasis. Examples of blue-collar green jobs are home insulation or solar panel installation.

History does prove that women are undoubtedly underrepresented when it comes to manual labor construction work. Women only comprise 3% of the population of building trade workers. This gender inequality is just similar to jobs such as an electrician who’s hooking up HVAC units to installing solar arrays.

Those are blue-collar green jobs and are usually good for men. But what about women? Shouldn’t women be employed in white-collar green jobs too?

Actually, there aren’t any hindrances for women to take part as construction or energy lawyers, to engage in green projects or to establish businesses that promote innovative green products. Gender equity is just one of those issues. The real problem lies in the fact: there is a greater need to come with new efforts that encourage the demand for both blue-collar and white-collar workers and at the same creating an income that will revive America’s economy.

Still, women have lesser opportunities in the green initiatives. In the leadership of the ABA Construction Law, women are just 16% of the total population. There are even a few scientists, researchers, engineers and financiers. So, here’s a list of the things that need to be done in order to change this scenario:

Make white-collar green jobs suitable for economic incentives. In turn, America will have a greener economy. Green job trainings will just be wasted if there aren’t any newly-established businesses geared towards creating demand for people to build solar arrays. In turn, both men and women will be reaping the benefits.

There are now green education programs online such as those offered by the Eco Institution where women can be trained to become Eco Consultants. This green training allows them to perform green home makeovers in their area and help homeowners identify areas where they can save up to 30% per month on the their energy and water bills. Other green training programs for women involved in fields like law, business, engineering and finance. Alumni groups from various higher educational institutions can do their part. They could come up with programs that not only their alumni can benefit but as well as the other professionals within their geographical area.

Save Money by Going Green

Climate change is an obvious scenario of our worsening environmental condition but before it gets too late, realizing efficient ways of going green will not only mean saving our environment but also saving money. With the summer heat scorching more than ever, from New York to Tokyo, we can only do as much to protect ourselves and our surroundings from the potential dangers of global warming, which according to the survey recently published by the National Academy of Sciences based on 1,400 climate researchers worldwide, about 97% believe that global warming is caused by people. But before we are immobilized by our own fears and worries, there are still some “green” moves people can undertake to go green and save our money.

Using energy efficient bulbs is a surefire way to cut bills by 75%. New LEDs are cost-effective choices that cut 95% of energy consumption as they emit much softer light. Likewise, it would also be a good idea to decorate your house with energy-efficient appliances which are now being manufactured by many appliance companies to contribute efforts with the go green campaign. To spot energy-efficient appliances, look for those with EnergyStar seal from the Department of Energ— they use about 30% less power than those without the seal. Of course, it’s such a great sight to have a huge TV in your house’s living room, but the bad side is the bigger the screen you have the more power is consumed in operating it. Continue reading

There’ a million reasons why “going green” at home is essentially important. Captain Planet worked so hard to keep Planet Earth a good place to live in because what’s good for the planet is also good for us. Plus, saving money on utility costs is a really big help at times when the economy is at its lowest.
