Green Collar to Offset Job Loss in Canadian Car Industries
After five years of tumultuous job losses in the Canadian car industry, the green collar or clean industry jobs might come to save the day. Clean energy industries are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number people to employ to man various available posts. The demand coincided with the increased demand for electric cars by consumers.
Canada is one of the many countries that is being hit by the global financial crisis. Although the demand for green jobs is starting to grow exponentially, it still has not able to cope with the job losses suffered by the country for the past five years. The country’s second-biggest auto parts manufacturer, Linamar Corp, is set to hire around 1,300 people at its manufacturing center in Guelph, Ontario before the end of 2011. Linda Hasenfratz, the auto-industry’s CEO, stated that the demand for green jobs is catapulted by the many new contracts offered to the company for the manufacture of vehicle parts or components that are more fuel and energy-efficient. The Canadian Government is Investing in New Clean Energy Projects in Alberta
The Canadian Minister for Environment and Parks, Jim Prentice, has announced that Great Northern Power Corp will get up to $4.5 million of government funding through the Government’s Clean Energy Fund. The funds will be used for Northern Power’s upcoming project which will convert waste heat from industrial engines into power. This project will also get an additional $2 million from the Sustainable Development Technology Canada’s (SDTC) Tech Fund. He said as part of their policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, climate change & creation of high quality jobs for Canadians, they would continue investing in clean, renewable energy technologies.
In this project the technology will recapture waste heat from engines working at remote off-grid power generators and compressor stations. When electricity is produced, the fossil fuel will be displaced resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. Vicky Sharpe, President and CEO of SDTC said the technology used in the demonstration project is a prominent example of how clean technologies are making the economy more productive and competitive.
