“Carboholics” (Carbon-Loving) US & China are Unlikely Marriage for Energy Efficiency Project

us china relationsThe saying “two heads are better than one” comes to mind when trying to work through a particularly difficult crossword puzzle; but how universal is this old adage? Are say, two countries better than one? Our leadership seems to be hedging their bets towards the conclusion that this is in fact the case. In line with this spirit of collaboration comes the latest in a series of interesting (and sometimes unlikely) pairings in the environmental research and development field. Berkeley Lab has been chosen to lead a cooperative US-China project called the Clean Energy Resource Center (CERC).

The project was conceived in 2009, beginning with a meeting between United States President Barack Obama and President Hun Jintao of China. The meeting was held in Beijing to establish a basis for the cooperative effort, which will work to develop efficient energy-saving buildings and cost-effective / waste reducing construction processes in the next five years. It is a dubious mating for the more cynical among us, especially considering the United States’ seemingly uncontrollable construction fetish (for wastefully assembled “throwaway buildings” which are simply replaced every 10 or 15 years or whenever they go out of style) and China’s love for all things carbon (if you recall the vicious smog that threatened the health of Olympic Athletes during the Beijing Summer Games and the mysterious “air scrubbers” that the Chinese government was supposedly using to keep the rampant pollution under control). Important Trends in Alternative Energy Deals

Stephen Trauber Last week’s Energy Inc. conference was a great opportunity for investment banker Stephen Trauber. In the said conference, he shared his valuable time and efforts as he spoke about the world of energy and of its future as well. Being an investment banker and with his ample experiences, he sure did gave a lot of insights to his audience.

Investment banker Stephen Trauber has worked so hard in this year’s biggest energy deals, such as Smith International’s $13.8 billion sale to Schlumberger and Nabors’ acquisition of Superior Well Services. He is currently working as the vice chairman and managing director and global head of energy investment banking at UBS Investment Bank in Houston, Texas. UBS is a top three investment bank in the oil and gas sector and it continues to live on to its mission and strategies with great strength and pride. Continue reading

Green Jobs and Green Skills are Happening

Green Jobs hard hat showing recycling logoThe drive towards green jobs and green skills has taken its toll on every nation. More and more countries are doing their share to level up with the current trend in generating green jobs and green skills. Previously, the Obama administration has announced that US is investing on hundred billion dollars to roll out green projects and measures, other countries are planning to follow suit.

China has already reinforced intensive spending of hundred billion dollar stimulus package on green products and services. Japan on the other hand is offering zero-interest loans for environmentally friendly projects and programs. Europe is not to be left behind as renewable energy firms employ around 400,000 green workers and this figure is still rising. Ready to face the challenge is Australia. However, a lot has to be done to be able to position itself to be one of the leading “green-market” providers globally. Going green is an opportunity for Australia to have a sustainable future while rebuilding its economy.

Supporting Clean Energy Efforts Averts Ecological Disasters and Creates Green Jobs

Wind Turbines in the Middle of a FarmThe figures had it that the United States is second to China in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. With many ecological disasters the US has recently become involved to, many American citizens have actively supported efforts reduce the nation’s dependency on non-renewable power source and look for alternative energy sources that are way cheaper and safer. The Pew Research Center Poll has revealed that 87 percent of Americans favor energy sources coming from solar and wind power.

In one of Progressive States Network’s Stateside Dispatches, it is shown that adding more renewable energy systems will help in decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere, produce more employment in the green sector, free up more power to energy providers to sell to consumers.

China is Now the World’s Biggest Energy Consumer

China's Rising Energy DemandThe International Energy Agency has recently revealed that China has surpassed the US in terms of overall energy use. The data gathered by the agency is a testament to China’s unstoppable economic growth and rapid industrialization. China’s insatiable need for more power has profound implication on the United State’s energy security.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency stated that China used 2.252 billion tons of oil equivalent in 2009 while the US consumed 2.170 billion tons of oil equivalent. Oil-equivalent is a type of measurement used to gauge the amount of overall energy used including other energy forms such as natural gas, coal, nuclear, and even renewable resources such as wind and hydropower. However, these figures have been denied by China.

Green Industry Strong Enough to Resist Effect of Economic Downturn

Power Generating WindmillsThe United Nations report on renewable energy generation has concluded that the green and green jobs are a reliable industry and is able to withstand the economic pressures that toppled down most industries in 2009. In fact, creation of new energy out of renewable sources has exceeded expectations of clean energy power capacity estimates from just two years ago. The UN report showed strong growth in the clean energy power generation in the Americas, Asia and Europe. In 2009, a total of 80 giga-watts (GW) of renewable power capacity were added worldwide.

The UN also added that the green industry is gained ground, being one of the most resilient markets and was unaffected during the onset of the global financial crisis. Governments around the globe are seeing great opportunities for renewable energy and green collar job creation in a quest to depend on cleaner and more efficient forms of energy. 2010 Global Status and Global Trends in Sustainable Energy Investment 2010, two of UN reports on renewable energy, documented a slight decline in industry investments. The drop was attributed to the lessened investment of both biofuels and solar energy generation. However, the effect was still positive because of the investment made on other forms of renewable power sources including wind power and the biomass sub-market showing a 34% rise in investment which is equivalent to $4 billion in the same period. China greener and cleaner than the U.S.?

An organization that is dedicated towards green living and environment protectionThe U.N. Environment Program and Renewable Energy Policy Network (21st century) has disclosed in recently released reports that even though there was a financial recession in 2009, investments in clean renewable energy actually increased worldwide. The private and public sector contributed $162 billion for clean energy investments. It was noted that polices regarding a green economy with renewable energy and energy efficient businesses also increased.

By early 2010, more then 100 countries implemented policies related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. 38 developing countries had policy goals and 42 developing countries had a policy in place to promote renewable energy. Some did well, others failed. Continue reading

China’s Rare Earth Export Cuts Are Hurting Green Jobs in the US

Rare earth ore shown against a dimeGreen jobs and technology are completely dependent on enough supply of rare earth minerals such as yttrium, scandium, and the fifteen lanthanides. The US has become increasingly dependent to China over the past few years in the manufacture and supply of these minerals to support its clean energy efforts. When China announced last week that it’s cutting its rare earth export by 72%, the US began to foresee shortages on its supply to support local industries.

The United States Magnetic Materials Association or USMMA is particularly concerned about the issue because it is the agency that is charged with representing the welfare of local magnet suppliers and producers. The businesses that are dependent on these materials include industries involved with in the PDA’s, MP3 players, and defense and security systems. Ed Richardson, the USMMA President, said that the US should take the necessary action to keep itself from complete dependence from these minerals if it wants to lead the world in green technology. Moreover, domestic production is being encouraged as a solution. Continue reading
