Governor Brown Pushes Clean Energy Job Agenda
More and more political candidates are jumping on the bandwagon of “going green” by including environmental friendly plans into their platform pitching even far-reaching goals sometimes. One addition to these “eco-candidates” is Jerry Brown, a Democratic gubernatorial nominee who wants to create clean-energy jobs. Brown, a wizened political veteran was California’s Governor in 70s. He was actually one of the first politicians to promote renewable energy like solar and wind during his time. And now with the current “green trend,” his renewable energy goals are all the more applicable.
Brown is proposing to create 20,000 megawatts renewable electricity by 2020 and calls for placing solar panels on major thoroughfares across the state. A goal which other clean energy analyst say is unrealistic. By comparison, The California Solar Initiative aims to create 3,000 megawatts of solar produced by 2016. Continue reading
Rhode Island Introduces Special Program to Meet Demand for Green Collar Professionals
Providence, Rhode Island has now begun a special training program in order to meet the growing demand for green collar professionals in the state. The 16-week program allows participants to earn in-demand certifications for energy-efficient construction, green renovation and deconstruction, renewable energy, as well as lead and asbestos removal. It is being offered to low income residents in the west Providence area free of charge.
The program is being sponsored in part by Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline. He explained that the program, which has started with just 67 students will eventually grow to 200 or more. The certification will be awarded after a mix of classroom, job readiness and on-site training. After 5 weeks of class study, each participant will receive a weekly stipend for 11 weeks as part of the on-the-job portion of the training program. Partnering with the city for the job-training component of the program are Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living, an environmentally focused South Providence nonprofit organization, and Ecotope, a South Providence waste-management company formerly known as CleanScape.
Michael Van Leesten, chairman and CEO of the of Rhode Island said the emerging green economy promises a wealth of new job opportunities for Rhode Island residents, part of the reason that the state has chosen to fund the program. Opportunities Industrialization Center is another South Providence-based organization partnering with the city on the program.

“Blue Green Tour” Set to Travel Country Promoting Green Collar Employment and Legislation

From now until September, a group of labor unions and environmental organizations is beginning a national bus tour dubbed “The Job’s Not Done Tour.” The group plans to visit 17 states and make 30 stops beginning in California and passing through, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas, and Michigan on the way to Richmond, Virginia. The tour is being staffed by workers in the clean energy sector, also known as green collar workers.
Blue-Green Alliance Executive Director David Foster told reporters on a press conference call the tour will work to promote green collar employment as well as renewable and alternative energy production. The program will also highlight the relationship between the ongoing economic crisis and the need to pass climate change and clean energy jobs legislation.
Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen highlighted the importance of creating new green collar jobs in the high-tech sector and the need for the government to make a serious commitment to modernize America’s green economy.
Baby Boomers Join Green Collar Workforce

Increasingly, Baby Boomers considering delayed retirement are joining the green collar workforce. The 79 million baby boomers currently nearing retirement age are increasingly moving towards the green sector to take advantage of the opportunities it affords. The Pew Research Center conducted a survey in June 2010 and found that 60 percent of adults ages 50-61 are planning to put off retirement due to the recession. In addition, 35 percent of individuals 62 years and older reported that they’ve already postponed retirement. Current unemployment figures paint a picture that is discouraging for all workers; however the green sector has proven to be very recession resistant in part due to massive government subsidies supporting the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries. These include a variety of corporate exemptions, tax credits, grants and loans for the solar and wind power industries as well as funds allocated through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act earmarked for retrofit and energy efficiency programs.

Green Tax Incentives and Missed Opportunities
Despite of the many budget cuts experienced by different government sectors, the amount of tax incentives is increasing for companies which are paving the way to making their buildings more energy-efficient and gradually changing their infrastructure to enable them to use renewable power source. However, in spite of the good news, such opportunity is hardly ever successfully taken advantage of according to an article written by Steve Heusinger and Ramon Reynoso.
$2.3 billion federal budget is reserved as incentives for companies investing in renewable resources. But applying for such incentive might be more complex than most people think. The awarding of incentives is hampered by the constant changes and rule revisions for the government’s incentive program. More than 1,200 state and local incentive programs await companies joining the race towards becoming energy-efficient. These incentive programs come in the form of rebates and loans, sales, property tax, and corporate savings. But these incentives are never fully taken advantage of due to burdensome bureaucratic processes involved in the tax credit.

Gulf Coast now Looking for Green and Clean Energy jobs
People do not want to go back to business as usual just because the oil spill has been stopped by BP. Over a visit to the coast it’s been observed that some people are losing hope. Gulf Coast residents need green energy jobs and not oil or gas related jobs that have impacted the health and the environment in a negative way. There is a dire need for clean energy jobs which can be attained through green education polices that put our economy on a green energy path.
People have heard about the expected creation of green jobs and stimulation of the economy through clean energy government policies. Obama has talked about this in the Gulf of Mexico tragedy, in his Oval Office speech. In terms of action, nothing substantial has been done, it’s been all talk so far. Action generates green business opportunities, not talk. Continue reading
Green Jobs in a Viable Economy Matters Big Time for America
A new CEA report of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has already been released last week. Based on the said report, ARRA has done well for America’s environment and its people. In other words, the act has given clean energy and jobs for American residents.
According to CEA’s estimates, “ARRA has saved and created a total of between 2.5 million and 3.6 million jobs as of the second quarter of 2010—an estimated 827,000 of which are a result of public investment in clean energy production, energy efficiency, grid modernization, and advanced vehicles manufacturing”.
The U.S Dept of Energy grants $1.8 billion for the creation of clean energy jobs
The Energy Department has granted $1.8 billion to Abengoa Solar and Abound Solar Manufacturing, to aid them in the construction new solar plants. This grant is a part of the Government’s policy to start a sustainable environment and also for the creation of more job opportunities for the American people. The grant is a part of the $862 billion stimulus bill set aside for environmental protection, creation of sustainable job opportunities and ending the country’s dependence on foreign oil.
Abengoa Solar, based in Arizona will build one of the world’s largest solar plants. It is reckoned that this project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions yearly by 475,000 tons which is equivalent to carbon dioxide emitted by 90,000 vehicles annually. Construction is expected to start by autumn and begin operations by mid 2013. Continue reading
