Successful Tesla IPO “Charges” Electric Car Market

In the midst of a struggling economy, it always feels good to hear about a company that has managed to carve out some success despite the trying times. It feels even better when that company is a key player in the green technology sector. In this case the company is Tesla Motors [Nasdaq: TSLA], the manufacturer of the groundbreaking Tesla Roadster.

A June IPO (Initial Public Offering) for Tesla managed to raise 200 million dollars in equity financing for the company, the first US automaker to go public in 54 years. The success of their financing push in the midst of the current financial turmoil is an encouraging sign for the electric car market in general, signaling that investors (and hopefully consumers) are ready to move on the technology. In addition since IPO’s in general have lost popularity with investors since the dot com crisis earlier this decade, the relative strength of Tesla’s IPO may be another herald of success.

BP to start test to stop oil spill

BP temporarily stopped leak after putting capBP began a test that could potentially stop the oil spill from its destroyed rig on Wednesday. If the cap tests run smoothly, BP finally will be able to demonstrate results in stopping the oil spill from its rig that went out of control three very long months ago. Retired Coast Guard admiral Thad W. Allen confirmed after a briefing in the state of New Orleans after BP scientists approved the plan. The test were delayed, yet again for almost a day to make sure that mistakes weren’t being made.

The new test will involve an attempt to close another valve that was left open to alleviate the pressure and continues to leak. The test will include a serious of steps to close the open valves one by one while considering the safety of the procedure. The worst thing to happen if the tests fail will result in the leaking of the well from the bottom of the sea instead of going through the hole in the destroyed oil rigs. Continue reading

BP Attaches New Cap on Gushing Oil Well

BP Installed New Containment Cap on Damaged Oil Welln the most recent attempt to stop the BP oil spill, a tight fitting cap was affixed on top. The disaster that led to the rig explosion has greatly damaged the surrounding bodies of water and coastal regions, continuing to pose a threat to both. The most recent attempt lasted for two days and is seen as a temporary fix to the gushing oil well. BP is still trying to develop a plan to permanently stop the gushing oil leak.

Residents of the affected coastal areas are quite doubtful about the company’s ability to contain the spill. However most people are thankful that steps are still being taken to stop oil from rushing out into the ocean. BP has employed local fishermen and boat owners whose livelihood was affected by the spill to posts in the Vessels of Opportunity program. Those who were employed can only hope that the company’s effort will pay off soon.

US Court Rejects Obama Administration’s Moratorium on Deep-Water Drilling

Obama administration’s Talk on Moratorium on Offshore Drilling A federal US Court of Appeals in New Orleans rejected Obama’s government to reinstate the moratorium on deepwater drilling ban after the disastrous BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused by the explosion of the drilling rig. The administration recently filed a case to challenge a lower court’s decision to put on hold a moratorium on the offshore drilling before the US Court of Appeals. However, the Court of Appeals has rejected it and will allows the drilling activity while looking for other options.

A lot of drilling companies are not amenable to the decision of the US government to stop any further oil drilling just because Deepwater Horizon failed. The recent decision of the US government to put a moratorium on oil drilling offshore was faced with lawsuits from more than a dozen companies operating offshore rigs in the same fashion. The court will also call both parties together on August 30 to finally hear the government’s bid to stop the operation of deepwater drilling until it has finally figured out a better way to enhance the safety of offshore drilling activities.
