ON LINE – Nevada’s Southwest Intertie Project: How it Demonstrates Commitment to Renewable Green Energy
The town of Apex, Nevada is normally just the location of the Apex Regional Landfill (the largest landfill in the state of Nevada), a small relief power station that comes online when nearby Las Vegas is overloading the grid and not much else. However last week brought red-letter days for this dusty, nondescript stretch of Hwy 93 situated just northeast of the city of lights. The One Nevada Transmission Line or “ON Line” (so clever!) project commencement was hosted at NV Energy’s [NASDAQ: NVE] Harry Allen Generating Station campus on Tuesday. It was a fairly star-studded event with U.S. Energy Secretary Ken Salazar and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid both in attendance, alongside a veritable who’s who of Nevada’s energy-industry brass to witness the beginning of a project that is being billed as a significant breakthrough in the support of renewable power and a major source of green collar jobs, as well as being symbolic of the new direction the state of Nevada is taking towards energy policy through the strong support of renewables.
The One Nevada transmission line consists of a 500 kilovolt power conduit that will cover the entire length of the state of Nevada running north-south. It will eventually be extended as far north as Idaho. The portion of the line that will be completed in this first phase consists of a 235-mile line extending from the Harry Allen site to a new electrical substation that will be constructed northwest of the town of Ely, Nevada. The projected price tag for the project will top $510 million. Continue reading

Controversial Waste-Burning Renewable Energy Powerplant Moves Forward in Baltimore’s Fairfield Neighborhood
At the site of a former agricultural chemical processing facility in south Baltimore Maryland, Energy Answers of Albany, N.Y. is working on a different kind of renewable energy electrical generation facility. The power source? Trash. That’s right, garbage – the company hopes to take refuse off the curb and bring it right back to you through the meter. The generator would produce a moderately sized 120MW of electricity directly to the grid plus steam heat available locally to industrial consumers by burning up to 4,000 tons of garbage a day.
The project is classified as a renewable energy venture because it won’t be using fossil fuels to generate power. Because of that it is eligible for lucrative federal funding. Instead of functioning in the capacity of a normal incinerator, the facility will use Processed Refuse Fuel (PRF) which is essentially sorted and shredded residential and commercial garbage. The PRF burns cleaner and hotter than refuse that is used as fuel in traditional incinerators. The boiler will also use moderate amounts of Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) because of the high energy density of the material. Continue reading

Managing Green Job Training
Government support of green-collar
It looks like the traditional workforce classifications of white / blue collar have a new companion that is here to stay: green collar jobs. Two decades ago, energy conservation and renewable energy programs in their infancy struggled with instability as well as a lack of public and economic support. However as the new millennium has unfolded it has served up consumers with a bitter cocktail of rising fuel and energy costs, increasing limitations on access to energy, steady tax hikes and continuingly dire predictions about the future of our planet’s environment should we continue down this road. With these factors serving as constant reminders of the importance of saving energy, consumer awareness of the efficiency and renewable “green” energy sectors is higher now than it has ever been. Thanks in part to that heightened awareness, in the next decade it is expected that we will see a up to a 400% increase in the eco-related green jobs market.
In anticipation of the growth in the sector, the government has funded $500 million to boost green jobs-related training focused on energy conservation and natural resources preservation. Graduate training has also begun to shift its focus from pure academics to more utilitarian leadership roles in applied sciences; particularly on energy conservation programs, environmental management, and planning.

Clinton Global Initiative Reveals High Hopes for Green Jobs
At the recent Clinton Global Initiative conference held in New York Last week, a variety of different topics were discussed. Among the hottest topics: Green Jobs and the growth of the green economy. The Clinton Global Initiative describes itself as:
“…a meeting of innovative, action-oriented, and socially responsible leaders in the world. The Clinton Global Initiative’s Annual Meeting brings together heads of state, government and business leaders, scholars, and NGO directors. Participants analyze pressing global challenges, discuss the most effective solutions, and build lasting partnerships that enable them to create positive social change.”
That being said, it should be encouraging that green development and the green economy were one topic that was on the tip of everyone’s tongue. According to leaders at the conference, the green sector is the shining light amidst an otherwise gloomy outlook.

Rhode Island Introduces Special Program to Meet Demand for Green Collar Professionals
Providence, Rhode Island has now begun a special training program in order to meet the growing demand for green collar professionals in the state. The 16-week program allows participants to earn in-demand certifications for energy-efficient construction, green renovation and deconstruction, renewable energy, as well as lead and asbestos removal. It is being offered to low income residents in the west Providence area free of charge.
The program is being sponsored in part by Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline. He explained that the program, which has started with just 67 students will eventually grow to 200 or more. The certification will be awarded after a mix of classroom, job readiness and on-site training. After 5 weeks of class study, each participant will receive a weekly stipend for 11 weeks as part of the on-the-job portion of the training program. Partnering with the city for the job-training component of the program are Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living, an environmentally focused South Providence nonprofit organization, and Ecotope, a South Providence waste-management company formerly known as CleanScape.
Michael Van Leesten, chairman and CEO of the of Rhode Island said the emerging green economy promises a wealth of new job opportunities for Rhode Island residents, part of the reason that the state has chosen to fund the program. Opportunities Industrialization Center is another South Providence-based organization partnering with the city on the program.

“Blue Green Tour” Set to Travel Country Promoting Green Collar Employment and Legislation
From now until September, a group of labor unions and environmental organizations is beginning a national bus tour dubbed “The Job’s Not Done Tour.” The group plans to visit 17 states and make 30 stops beginning in California and passing through, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas, and Michigan on the way to Richmond, Virginia. The tour is being staffed by workers in the clean energy sector, also known as green collar workers.
Blue-Green Alliance Executive Director David Foster told reporters on a press conference call the tour will work to promote green collar employment as well as renewable and alternative energy production. The program will also highlight the relationship between the ongoing economic crisis and the need to pass climate change and clean energy jobs legislation.
Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen highlighted the importance of creating new green collar jobs in the high-tech sector and the need for the government to make a serious commitment to modernize America’s green economy.
Obama Pledges Clean Energy Policy to Create 800,000 Jobs by 2012
In a speech given during a visit to a Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin battery plant on Monday, President Barack Obama predicted that the nation’s manufacturing and industry would be a primary source of economic growth and that the policies his administration is putting in place would create 800,000 jobs in the next two years.
“Our commitment to clean energy … [is] going to help lay the foundation for lasting economic growth,” Obama proclaimed at Wisconsin-based ZBB Energy’s main facility [AMEX: ZBB]. The Company designs, develops, manufactures and distributes energy storage systems and solutions based on their zinc-bromine rechargeable electrical energy storage and power management technologies.
The president also targeted Republicans for stymieing the Democrats’ policies in Congress. Attempting to pin the tail of economic woe on the GOP, he claimed that the party has “made the political calculation that it’s better to stand on the sidelines than work as a team to help American businesses and American workers.”

BP – From Social Responsibility to Environmental Catastrophe
The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has triggered debate concerning how to effectively gauge corporate social responsibility. Many people have begun to doubt the intent of big companies, suspecting that they are not doing their job in ways that will protect both people and the environment.
In the case of BP [NYSE: BP] who was liable for the explosion and oil spill associated with the Deepwater Horizon deep-sea oil rig, the public has really been forced to take a second look at whether or not they can truly believe a company’s efforts to maintain an image of social responsibility. Before the oil spill, BP was lauded for its “Beyond Petroleum” campaign and the company’s efforts to position itself as the greenest fossil fuel producer. BP’s work in the field of marketing and reputation management even snagged two awards last year: PRWeek campaign of the year as well as an Effie from the American Marketing Association. Things were looking good for the London, UK based energy giant.

The U.S Dept of Energy grants $1.8 billion for the creation of clean energy jobs
The Energy Department has granted $1.8 billion to Abengoa Solar and Abound Solar Manufacturing, to aid them in the construction new solar plants. This grant is a part of the Government’s policy to start a sustainable environment and also for the creation of more job opportunities for the American people. The grant is a part of the $862 billion stimulus bill set aside for environmental protection, creation of sustainable job opportunities and ending the country’s dependence on foreign oil.
Abengoa Solar, based in Arizona will build one of the world’s largest solar plants. It is reckoned that this project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions yearly by 475,000 tons which is equivalent to carbon dioxide emitted by 90,000 vehicles annually. Construction is expected to start by autumn and begin operations by mid 2013. Continue reading
Plan for a £400m Humber Wind Farm has been revealed
A £400m project which will change the south bank of the Humber into a global center for renewable energy industries has been disclosed.
Turbines will be built for a huge North Sea wind farm on a site near Immingham which will become the base for energy wind production in the UK. Able UK, a Hartlepool based developer said if their plans are approved, around 27,000 green jobs will be created; 10,000 on-site jobs and 17,000 in northern Lincolnshire and the wider region. The Humber site which is the largest site available for port-related developments in the UK, covers nearly 2,000 acres. The company plans new quayside facilities for building and installing wind turbines and to generate biomass energy. Continue reading
