UK Turns Up the Volume on Green Education
Speaking at an event hosted by business advisory firm TEDCO, he said his government would not make headline grabbing environmental claims like the previous government. He said politicians talk enthusiastically about the environment and need for a green economy, but his government would do things differently. He added that they would not dazzle the people with green gimmicks but instead would like to make an impression on people by doing the job quietly.

Energy Efficient Appliances Should be Main Green Consideration
Have you been paying utility bills more than what you wanted to? It’s depressing, right? Same here, my utility bills are so high that they’re eating up my budget.
Then, you need a “green” to your problems. It’s time for you to replace your old appliances with energy-efficient ones, especially those with an Energy Star certification. By doing so, you are able to do three things: save more, reduce home energy consumption by 10-50%.

Obama Pledges Clean Energy Policy to Create 800,000 Jobs by 2012

In a speech given during a visit to a Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin battery plant on Monday, President Barack Obama predicted that the nation’s manufacturing and industry would be a primary source of economic growth and that the policies his administration is putting in place would create 800,000 jobs in the next two years.
“Our commitment to clean energy … [is] going to help lay the foundation for lasting economic growth,” Obama proclaimed at Wisconsin-based ZBB Energy’s main facility [AMEX: ZBB]. The Company designs, develops, manufactures and distributes energy storage systems and solutions based on their zinc-bromine rechargeable electrical energy storage and power management technologies.
The president also targeted Republicans for stymieing the Democrats’ policies in Congress. Attempting to pin the tail of economic woe on the GOP, he claimed that the party has “made the political calculation that it’s better to stand on the sidelines than work as a team to help American businesses and American workers.”

Terra-Gen Gets Green Light for Wind Farm in Mojave Desert

Tuesday marks the start of the Alta Wind Energy Center, which plans to build turbines on thousands of acres in California’s desolate Mojave Desert. It is being called the largest power project in the country, placing towering wind turbines in the Mojave Desert foothills, which will produce electricity for 600,000 homes in Southern California.
The project has faced a lot of problems, from years of ownership changes, opposition from local residents and endless infrastructure delays. On Tuesday the project will finally kick off in the Tehachapi Pass, a budding hot spot for wind energy located 75 miles north of Los Angeles. Analysts have said that after completion, the Alta Center could produce three times more energy than the country’s largest existing wind farm.

BLOGOSPHERE GOES “GREEN”: THEY’VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY
The online world offers a lot of opportunities for Internet users to air out their opinions, comments, thoughts and suggestions. Take the blogosphere, for example. The blogosphere is composed of all blogs as well as their connections.
In the realm of the blogosphere, everybody has a lot to say. One of the topics that have been a hot discussion is on America’s push for a greener economy and environment. So, here’s what the bloggers are talking about in the blogosphere:
Green Jobs and Renewable Energy
Renewable energy industry has proven its potential to create jobs. Under current policies, the European Union could create sizeable number of jobs: 950,000 direct and indirect full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs and increase to 1.4 million in the next decade. The biggest growth is anticipated to come from job creation in the consumer and small business sectors as homeowners focus on green lifestyles in order to enhance home energy efficiency, health, comfort and sustainability. Green home and small business green inspections are expected to grow exponentially over the next decade fueling the demand for educated green inspectors.
The European Union’s Advanced Renewable Strategy can potentially create 1.7 million jobs in 2010 which will almost double at 2.5 million in the next decade. It is projected that 60 to 70 percent of jobs will be filled in the renewable energy sector. European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) stated that if renewable energy share on European Union’s overall energy consumption is augmented, the number of jobs in this sector will inevitably rise to more than 2 million. China’s Rare Earth Export Cuts Are Hurting Green Jobs in the US
Green jobs and technology are completely dependent on enough supply of rare earth minerals such as yttrium, scandium, and the fifteen lanthanides. The US has become increasingly dependent to China over the past few years in the manufacture and supply of these minerals to support its clean energy efforts. When China announced last week that it’s cutting its rare earth export by 72%, the US began to foresee shortages on its supply to support local industries.
The United States Magnetic Materials Association or USMMA is particularly concerned about the issue because it is the agency that is charged with representing the welfare of local magnet suppliers and producers. The businesses that are dependent on these materials include industries involved with in the PDA’s, MP3 players, and defense and security systems. Ed Richardson, the USMMA President, said that the US should take the necessary action to keep itself from complete dependence from these minerals if it wants to lead the world in green technology. Moreover, domestic production is being encouraged as a solution. Continue reading
