Going Green With an Eco Restaurant

Cafe Habana owner, Sean MeenanIf Mr. Sean Meenan’s not into speaking engagements about sustainability concepts, he’s nowhere else to be found except right at his very own Habana Outpost, his pride and joy – an ecologically conscious restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Recently, Mr. Meenan led a group of girls, ages 11 to 14, around his restaurant’s brightly colored outdoor patio. It was a great opportunity for Mr. Meenan to show his eco-restaurant’s solar panels, a rainwater-collection system that feeds the toilets, a recycling and composting station, wheat-board wall paneling, corn-based plastic cups and a bicycle-powered blender powered.

Aside from running his eco-restaurant, Mr. Meenan is an amazing spokesman for environmentalism. He goes from one speaking engagement to another so he could teach others about environmentalism. Through these speaking engagements, he tries his very best to let people see his point, so that just like him, people will go green and do something for the environment’s sake. Continue reading

Alaska’s First Geothermal Plant: The Frontier State’s Green Energy Breakthrough

The Naknek geothermal project
King Salmon is a community known for its strong salmon fishing tradition and for the violent 1912 eruption of Mt. Katmai which collapsed into itself, making 2,000 feet of mountain disappear. But nearly a century later King Salmon, the nearest community to the impressively wild and prehistoric Katmai National Park and Preserve has become a home base for energy discovery. Because of this, residents are not only focusing on their fishing tradition, but on the drilling process.

A project converting Planet Earth’s trapped heat into energy is not new. However, the one underway on the Aleutian Chain’s northern tip is going to be Alaska’s first. Naknek Electric Association’s drilling marks Alaska’s first opportunity to have their very own utility-grade geothermal plant. Aside from being host to Alaska’s first geothermal plant residents of the Bristol Bay region will also benefit in other ways, since utility rates are projected to decrease by 50% or more. At first, only three communities; Naknek, South Naknek and King Salmon, will be able to connect with the new power source. However the project’s goal is to bring in all 28 villages of the Bristol Bay region to the new power source.

The first geothermal well measuring 10,000 feet or nearly 2.5 miles in depth was drilled earlier this summer, at a cost of $20 million. The second well is estimated to cost approximately $9 million and will begin this fall. A third well is still in the planning stages.

The Modern Family BungalowCompanies, industries, hotels and others have embarked on the strategies geared towards a green economy. But mind you, they’re not the only ones. In fact, the Zeeck family has conducted their green home education and the results have far exceeded all expectations. Who are the Zeeck’s?

The Zeeck family green contributions started off with the father himself, Andy Zeeck. Being his brother’s partner in Dwellings, Inc. (a prestigious interior design studio that provides assistance in designing a new home, etc.), Zeeck is going green and as much as his customers wanted him to be. He says, I’m not an evangelist. I don’t go around calling people on it”. Companies, industries, hotels and others have embarked on the strategies geared towards a green economy. But mind you, they’re not the only ones.
