Controversial Waste-Burning Renewable Energy Powerplant Moves Forward in Baltimore’s Fairfield Neighborhood
At the site of a former agricultural chemical processing facility in south Baltimore Maryland, Energy Answers of Albany, N.Y. is working on a different kind of renewable energy electrical generation facility. The power source? Trash. That’s right, garbage – the company hopes to take refuse off the curb and bring it right back to you through the meter. The generator would produce a moderately sized 120MW of electricity directly to the grid plus steam heat available locally to industrial consumers by burning up to 4,000 tons of garbage a day.
The project is classified as a renewable energy venture because it won’t be using fossil fuels to generate power. Because of that it is eligible for lucrative federal funding. Instead of functioning in the capacity of a normal incinerator, the facility will use Processed Refuse Fuel (PRF) which is essentially sorted and shredded residential and commercial garbage. The PRF burns cleaner and hotter than refuse that is used as fuel in traditional incinerators. The boiler will also use moderate amounts of Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) because of the high energy density of the material. Continue reading
Hotels Are One of the Trailblazers for Green Trends
What’s the major push for the hotels these days if not to sustain the green trends? That’s right. US Green Building Council (USGBC) is in their major campaign taking care of the environment and pursuing ways on across-the-board compliance. Sounds like a big challenge for the council. But thinking about the benefits of caring for the environment, promoting sustainable homes and operating at cost-effective green solutions on how to address this challenge. Of course, inviting hotel owners to comply is another thing. So what’s the result?

Canada Eco Certification Becoming a Standard
As the effect of climate change and global warming takes its toll, more and more nations are going green, doing their share and coming up with conscious steps to save the environment. Most sectors have their own organizations to do their part to cut energy use, provide energy-efficiency measures, sustain environmentally friendly project and provide green jobs.
IT sectors have the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a non-profit group cutting carbon dioxide emission from computer use. Airline groups have carbon offset scheme, a voluntary method for passengers to donate and offset the share of carbon dioxide acquired on their flights. United States Green Building Council created Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED promoting new concepts to save water consumption have indoor environment quality, energy-efficiency and materials selection for buildings construction and designs. Training Californians for Sustainable Jobs
As America continues to realize the benefits of a green economy, more and more people are getting interested in it. A green economy takes on six main sectors, such as renewable energy, green buildings, clean transportation, water management, waste management and land management. Because of its varying advantages, many have participated in different programs, availed of green products/services and others have taken on green collar jobs.
To ensure that people are ready to work on green collar jobs, the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board and CleanEdison Inc. will start on a free, green job training program. Geared towards helping dislocated country residents, this program is made possible through the utilization of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009’s grant money. Other than ensuring the residents’ readiness on their jobs, the said program is also intended for motivating the regional economy as well as to enhance their skills.Sandy Harmsen, Director of Workforce Development in San Bernardino County., said “This program will provide crucial training to traditionally under-served community members, as well as retrain incumbent workers seeking to upgrade their skills.” Furthermore, he believes that the program is really beneficial for both the workers and the energy efficiency sector. “This initiative will help develop a skilled green workforce and provide career advancement and job security to workers, while helping to meet demand in the growing energy efficiency sector.”

Strategies for Green Homes
In buildings which are designed to qualify for LEED certification or National Green Building Certification, contractors and builders thoroughly choose materials, building practices and locations to meet the criteria for the stringent certification.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED was created by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and stands as a rating system for green building. It promotes new concepts to sustain five key areas of human and environmental health performance such as site development, water saving, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency and materials selection.
The Zeeck’s Goes Green: an Inspiration for Homeowners
Companies, industries, hotels and others have embarked on the strategies geared towards a green economy. But mind you, they’re not the only ones. In fact, the Zeeck family has conducted their green home education and the results have far exceeded all expectations. Who are the Zeeck’s?
The Zeeck family green contributions started off with the father himself, Andy Zeeck. Being his brother’s partner in Dwellings, Inc. (a prestigious interior design studio that provides assistance in designing a new home, etc.), Zeeck is going green and as much as his customers wanted him to be. He says, “I’m not an evangelist. I don’t go around calling people on it”. Companies, industries, hotels and others have embarked on the strategies geared towards a green economy. But mind you, they’re not the only ones. U.S Green Building Council and the Bank of America advocate Green Housing
A grant program has been initiated by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the U.S Green Building Council for the promotion of sustainability in housing areas. Developers and public agencies that are looking for LEED certification for an affordable neighborhood development will receive required funding and educational resources.
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a U.S Green Building council certification which is recognized worldwide. This certification comes when a third party verifies that a building or community has been designed and built by utilizing tactics to improve performances of parameters like energy savings,CO2 emission reduction etc. The aim is to ensure constructed builds are environment friendly by using environment friendly construction practices.
