“Carboholics” (Carbon-Loving) US & China are Unlikely Marriage for Energy Efficiency Project

us china relationsThe saying “two heads are better than one” comes to mind when trying to work through a particularly difficult crossword puzzle; but how universal is this old adage? Are say, two countries better than one? Our leadership seems to be hedging their bets towards the conclusion that this is in fact the case. In line with this spirit of collaboration comes the latest in a series of interesting (and sometimes unlikely) pairings in the environmental research and development field. Berkeley Lab has been chosen to lead a cooperative US-China project called the Clean Energy Resource Center (CERC).

The project was conceived in 2009, beginning with a meeting between United States President Barack Obama and President Hun Jintao of China. The meeting was held in Beijing to establish a basis for the cooperative effort, which will work to develop efficient energy-saving buildings and cost-effective / waste reducing construction processes in the next five years. It is a dubious mating for the more cynical among us, especially considering the United States’ seemingly uncontrollable construction fetish (for wastefully assembled “throwaway buildings” which are simply replaced every 10 or 15 years or whenever they go out of style) and China’s love for all things carbon (if you recall the vicious smog that threatened the health of Olympic Athletes during the Beijing Summer Games and the mysterious “air scrubbers” that the Chinese government was supposedly using to keep the rampant pollution under control). Obama in 2009, ARRA or the better known as the “stimulus bill” provides special level of funding to boost the economy through infrastructure and development projects including the energy sector. It also financially supports advancement of health care, education system, and expansion of social benefits.

The Bill pleased the renewable energy and environment sector because of the inclusion of $490 million to fund training programs for green workers from all walks of life. It created various green jobs such as organic farming, recycling, manufacturing green products and even green school teaching. It also produced renewable energy jobs like solar installer, wind turbine installer, wind energy technician and energy retrofit installer.

Likewise, non profit green organization like Green

Green Jobs and Green Skills are Happening

Green Jobs hard hat showing recycling logoThe drive towards green jobs and green skills has taken its toll on every nation. More and more countries are doing their share to level up with the current trend in generating green jobs and green skills. Previously, the Obama administration has announced that US is investing on hundred billion dollars to roll out green projects and measures, other countries are planning to follow suit.

China has already reinforced intensive spending of hundred billion dollar stimulus package on green products and services. Japan on the other hand is offering zero-interest loans for environmentally friendly projects and programs. Europe is not to be left behind as renewable energy firms employ around 400,000 green workers and this figure is still rising. Ready to face the challenge is Australia. However, a lot has to be done to be able to position itself to be one of the leading “green-market” providers globally. Going green is an opportunity for Australia to have a sustainable future while rebuilding its economy.

“Blue Green Tour” Set to Travel Country Promoting Green Collar Employment and Legislation

From now until September, a group of labor unions and environmental organizations is beginning a national bus tour dubbed “The Job’s Not Done Tour.” The group plans to visit 17 states and make 30 stops beginning in California and passing through, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas, and Michigan on the way to Richmond, Virginia. The tour is being staffed by workers in the clean energy sector, also known as green collar workers.

Blue-Green Alliance Executive Director David Foster told reporters on a press conference call the tour will work to promote green collar employment as well as renewable and alternative energy production. The program will also highlight the relationship between the ongoing economic crisis and the need to pass climate change and clean energy jobs legislation.

Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen highlighted the importance of creating new green collar jobs in the high-tech sector and the need for the government to make a serious commitment to modernize America’s green economy.

Obama Pledges Clean Energy Policy to Create 800,000 Jobs by 2012

In a speech given during a visit to a Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin battery plant on Monday, President Barack Obama predicted that the nation’s manufacturing and industry would be a primary source of economic growth and that the policies his administration is putting in place would create 800,000 jobs in the next two years.

“Our commitment to clean energy … [is] going to help lay the foundation for lasting economic growth,” Obama proclaimed at Wisconsin-based ZBB Energy’s main facility [AMEX: ZBB]. The Company designs, develops, manufactures and distributes energy storage systems and solutions based on their zinc-bromine rechargeable electrical energy storage and power management technologies.

The president also targeted Republicans for stymieing the Democrats’ policies in Congress. Attempting to pin the tail of economic woe on the GOP, he claimed that the party has “made the political calculation that it’s better to stand on the sidelines than work as a team to help American businesses and American workers.”

House Rep Leaders Urged Obama to Save Clean Energy Jobs Program

Efforts Underway to Save Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE)

The Obama Administration is encouraged by 60 House Representatives to save the save Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program. The program was said to have successfully created jobs in the green market and allowed home owners to save money on electricity costs and lowered the amount of carbon dioxide emissions per private residential unit.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has a put a stop in the operation of the PACE program this month. FHFA refused the idea of paying off PACE loans which is associated to residential homes as property assessments by nature and see it take priority over mortgage if in case the unit in question was foreclosed. However, this was opposed by the 60 house representatives and is asking the White House to reconsider the plan of reviving the said program and help protect individuals having mortgage investments.

Stimulus Bill Expected to Produce Nearly 1 Million Green Jobs

The Recovery Act Produces Nearly 1 Million Jobs in the Clean Energy SectorOne of the sectors that has greatly benefited from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) or The Stimulus is the clean energy sector. The Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) report stated that the Stimulus created jobs between 2.5-3.6 million jobs and 1 million of these are in industries producing clean energy. While these figures are something way below the level expected by the public, the number of good things still proves that The Recovery Act did a lot of good things especially in terms of investing on research on energy sustainability.

Investment in clean energy and environmental consciousness are some of Obama Administration’s key focus. This is evident in the dramatic shift in building fuel-efficient automobiles and those that make use of renewable energy such as biofuel. The US also heads international efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the installation of renewable energy machineries such as wind turbines, solar panels, biogas, hydroelectric and thermal plants, among others.
